Surat Castle
The 'Killa' built-in 1546 on the banks of the river Tapi by Sultan Mahmood III. The bastions are influenced by the Portuguese style of Architecture. The fort constructed out of Rajula stone and Basalt stone with the use of traditional techniques such as iron strips and molted iron. However, with time, the fort required conservation, restoration, and repair. An extensive work plan was executed for the fort's preservation, which brought back the glory of the castle. Interestingly, the fort has various historic layers such as the Dutch and the British alongside the Islamic style. Care was taken to retain Authenticity, Minimum Intervention and to Preserve the historic layers. The entrance side of the Castle is now open to the Tourists, while the riverside is undergoing restoration.
